While my family and Asian communities around the world celebrated the Lunar New Year, they also had to come to grips with the mass shooting that took place in Monterey Park. The recent release of Tyre Nichols’ death also sent a shockwave. Recent news of hate and violence over the past days and weeks remind us that our work in building an inclusive Canada is more important than ever. With that in mind, I am looking forward to some of the work we are doing to make this happen.
First, I couldn’t be happier to welcome the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honorable Mary Simon, as keynote speaker for CCDI UnConference 2023. Her commitment to championing human rights and social justice make her the perfect speaker for our event. I am honoured that she will be joining us.
In this Black History Month, we will be presenting a webinar called “Unlearning anti-Black racism”, where we will discuss tools and strategies to combat socially conditioned anti-Black racism. We also have an updated resource guide on racism and anti-Black racism to assist people on their DEI journey.
We will also be offering a free webinar this month on how to recognize and prevent antisemitism in the workplace. We will be joined by thought leaders from the Canadian Jewish community to discuss this important topic. It promises to be a powerful and informative session.
In this month’s episode of our Leader Talks podcast, I will be joined by professional engineer, university professor, EDI champion, and brand-new Fellow of Engineers Canada, Claudia Gomez-Villeneuve, to talk about the importance of women and girls in STEM. This will be released to coincide with International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Lastly, I’m excited to travel to New Zealand in a couple weeks to take part in launch of the Global Inclusion & Diversity Alliance (GIDA). I’m looking forward to collaborating with other not-for-profit organizations from around the world to learn from each other how to do DEI better, and to share thought leadership across our jurisdictions.
I hope you all have a fantastic February, and I’ll see you all next month!
Thanks,
Anne-Marie Pham
